Political analysts and observers reacted with surprise on Monday night after Vice President JD Vance appeared on Fox News and discussed the Trump administration’s negotiations with Iran.

Vance was interviewed by Sean Hannity on his primetime show, where the discussion turned to efforts by the Trump administration to reach an agreement with the Iranian regime. The talks are aimed at ending a nearly 17-week conflict that has shaken global markets and raised concerns over regional stability.

During the interview, Hannity asked Vance whether the United States would be allowed to inspect Iran’s nuclear program as part of any final agreement. Vance’s answer quickly drew attention online.

“That’s absolutely something we are negotiating over, Sean,” Vance said about the U.S. inspectors being allowed inside the country. “That is one of the final details that’s going to be figured out here.”

The response appeared to surprise some observers because President Donald Trump has repeatedly said that one of his central goals in the conflict with Iran is to make sure the country never develops a nuclear weapon. Critics argued that such a goal would be difficult to guarantee without a clear inspection and verification process included in any final peace agreement.

The issue of inspections has long been central to international efforts to monitor Iran’s nuclear activity. For that reason, Vance’s suggestion that access for inspectors was still among the unresolved details prompted immediate reaction from political commentators.

Several critics mocked the vice president’s remarks on social media, suggesting that the administration was presenting the negotiations as a success while leaving major questions unanswered.

“They’re gonna cut an amazing deal. One where Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff will be the inspectors,” Norman Ornstein, a political scientist and contributing editor at The Atlantic, posted on X.

“Hahahahahahaha,” Ornstein added.

Former Rep. Adam Kinzinger, a Republican from Illinois and frequent Trump critic, also responded sharply to Vance’s comments.

“Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahhahahahahahhaha dude,” Kinzinger posted on X.

Political commentator Jim Stewartson was similarly dismissive, criticizing the vice president’s effort to explain the administration’s position.

“Honestly, if it were almost anyone else but Peter Thiel’s Fleshlight, I would feel bad for whoever had to sell this wheelbarrow of dogs— to America,” Stewartson posted on X.

The backlash highlighted the skepticism facing the administration as it tries to sell any potential agreement with Iran to both domestic critics and international observers. While Vance framed the inspection issue as part of the ongoing negotiations, critics argued that it should be a core requirement rather than a detail left to be resolved later.

As talks continue, questions remain over what enforcement mechanisms, if any, will be included in a final deal.
