The Isanti County Sheriff’s Office is grappling with the tragic death of Sarah Jane Carda, 35, a registered nurse at the county jail, following a suspected domestic violence incident in neighboring Chisago County.

Last Friday afternoon, Sarah was fatally shot in her residence in Fish Lake Township. The authorities have charged her husband, Mike Larry Carda, 39, in relation to her death.

Having served as a nurse at the Isanti County jail in Cambridge since 2014, Sarah’s untimely demise deeply shocked the community. “Our hearts are broken and our agency is devastated,” expressed Sheriff Wayne Sieberlich in a heartfelt Facebook post.

Details from a recent criminal report reveal that the Chisago County deputies received a call concerning a house in Fish Lake Township with reported altercations and the presence of numerous weapons. Upon arrival, a deputy heard indications of a conflict inside. Moments later, gunfire was heard after a woman’s voice signaled the presence of a gun. A SWAT team was deployed, resulting in a standoff that concluded with the arrest of Mike Carda.

Notably, there was a prior domestic assault case against Mike involving Sarah, accompanied by a restraining order forbidding his proximity to her.

In remembrance of Sarah and to raise awareness, the Isanti County Sheriff’s Office highlighted that October stands as Domestic Violence Awareness Month, urging victims or those aware of any victims to reach out to the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 800-799-7233.

Mike Carda is now facing multiple charges, including second-degree murder, and is slated for a court appearance on Oct. 24. A fundraising initiative, set up by Sarah’s sister, aims to aid the family with associated costs and any surplus funds will be directed to the Domestic Abuse Project.
