In a post on Truth Social, Trump shared an article by former Trump aide Kash Patel, asserting Cheney’s involvement in evidence suppression. Trump’s post exclaimed, “SHE SHOULD BE PROSECUTED FOR WHAT SHE HAS DONE TO OUR COUNTRY! SHE ILLEGALLY DESTROYED THE EVIDENCE. UNREAL!!!”
Cheney, who served as the vice chair of the House Jan. 6 committee, rebutted Trump’s allegations on X (formerly Twitter), emphasizing the availability of grand jury and Jan. 6 transcripts to Trump for several months. She highlighted Trump’s fear of the truth, given the potential testimonies against him from various officials and aides published in The Federalist .
The dispute arises amid the backdrop of Cheney’s outspoken criticism of Trump, which she believes contributed to the Capitol riot, and her subsequent loss in the 2022 Wyoming primary to a Trump-endorsed candidate. This contention coincides with House Republicans’ efforts to challenge the initial investigation into the Capitol insurrection and vindicate Trump of any misconduct, as he eyes a reelection bid.
