Utah football coach Kyle Whittingham has made his intentions for the 2025 season crystal clear in the simplest way possible. After raising questions about his future with the Utes, Whittingham issued a short, yet unmistakable statement: “I’m back”, reported by CBS 19 News.
The memo, issued by the Utah football team on December 8, 2024, referenced Michael Jordan’s iconic 1995 return to basketball. Jordan famously announced his comeback from retirement with a simple fax that read, “I’m back.” Whittingham’s message echoed that legendary moment, showing his sense of humor and commitment to returning for his 21st season as Utah’s head coach.
In addition to his message, Whittingham signed off his memo with “-21-,” a nod to his upcoming 21st season at the helm of the Utes. The coach’s lighthearted tone came after a season of uncertainty, with some speculation about whether he would continue following Utah’s 5-7 finish in their first year in the Big 12 conference. This marked just the third losing season in Whittingham’s 20-year tenure at Utah, where he has compiled a 167-86 record.
Whittingham’s return is a significant moment for Utah football, as it solidifies the continuity of leadership for a program that has seen remarkable success under his guidance. His tenure includes seven seasons with 10 or more wins and a perfect 13-0 record in 2008, culminating in a Sugar Bowl victory over Alabama.
Whittingham also noted that defensive coordinator Morgan Scalley, who is slated to succeed him as head coach, played a role in his decision to return. “Coach Scalley will be involved in decisions going forward,” Whittingham said. “It’s only right that he does that because he’s the coach in waiting.”
In addition, Whittingham has made staffing moves, including hiring Jason Beck as the new offensive coordinator. Beck, who was the OC and quarterbacks coach for New Mexico, will help guide Utah’s offense, which struggled this past season, finishing No. 115 in total offense.
With Whittingham’s return confirmed, Utah football looks ahead to 2025 with optimism, and the team is eager to bounce back from a challenging season.
