The Indianapolis Colts have placed star defensive tackle DeForest Buckner on injured reserve, the team announced on Tuesday, according to the Reuters. Buckner sustained an ankle sprain during Sunday’s loss to the Green Bay Packers. While initial X-rays came back negative, further tests revealed that the injury was serious enough to sideline him for at least a month.

Buckner, 30, has been a key player for the Colts this season, recording 1.5 sacks, a tackle for loss, and seven total tackles through 2024. Last season, he was a standout on the defensive line with 8.0 sacks, 11 tackles for loss, and 21 quarterback hits. His absence will undoubtedly leave a significant hole in the Colts’ defense.

As a corresponding move, Indianapolis signed veteran defensive end Gerard Avery to the 53-man roster. Avery has played in 62 games throughout his career, tallying 8.5 sacks. The Colts will look to Avery to help bolster their pass rush in Buckner’s absence.

Additionally, the Colts made several practice squad adjustments, signing defensive tackle Adam Gotsis, cornerback Gregory Junior, and defensive end Titus Leo. To make room, the team released defensive tackle McTelvin Agim and cornerback Ameer Speed from the practice squad.

With Buckner out, the Colts will need their defensive line to step up as they navigate the next month without one of their top players. The team is hopeful Buckner will return healthy and ready to contribute for the latter part of the season.
