Budda Baker, one of the NFL’s top safeties, is staying with the Arizona Cardinals for the foreseeable future. The Cardinals announced Tuesday that the All-Pro safety has agreed to a three-year contract extension. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the deal is worth $54 million, with $30 million guaranteed.
The contract’s $18 million annual average makes Baker’s deal the fourth-largest for safeties in NFL history, reported by NFL. Only Antoine Winfield Jr. (Tampa Bay Buccaneers), Derwin James (Los Angeles Chargers), and Minkah Fitzpatrick (Pittsburgh Steelers) have contracts with higher average annual values.
Baker, 28, has been a cornerstone of Arizona’s defense since being selected in the second round of the 2017 NFL Draft. Over the past seven seasons, he has built an impressive resume, earning two first-team All-Pro selections, one second-team All-Pro nod, and six Pro Bowl appearances. Notably, Baker led the NFL in solo tackles in 2019 and is on track to achieve that milestone again this season.
Despite struggles on defense this year, the Cardinals (7-7) have benefited greatly from Baker’s consistent performance and leadership. His ability to make game-changing plays has helped solidify his role as a foundational player in Arizona.
Baker is also the second key player the Cardinals have locked up this season. Last month, running back James Conner signed a two-year extension, signaling the team’s commitment to retaining core talent as they look to remain competitive in the coming seasons.
