The New York Giants are set to begin the 2024 season with some notable changes, though the starting quarterback, Daniel Jones, remains the same. However, the responsibility for offensive playcalling will no longer rest with offensive coordinator Mike Kafka. Head coach Brian Daboll confirmed on Tuesday that he will be taking over playcalling duties from Kafka, who had been in charge for the past two seasons.

While Daboll’s first year saw the Giants jump from 31st to 15th in points scored per game, the team struggled significantly last season, dropping to 30th. ESPN reported that Daboll had pulled playcalling from Kafka on multiple occasions throughout the season, signaling a lack of confidence in the offensive direction. Despite this change in roles, Kafka was promoted to assistant head coach during the offseason, hinting that the organization still values his contributions.

When asked about the change, Daboll was cautious with his response, quickly redirecting attention to the team’s upcoming matchup with the Minnesota Vikings:

“I’d say, look, we work well together offensively. Getting ready to play Week 1, we’ve talked enough about that, doing everything we do to get ready.”

He also avoided elaborating on the added responsibility of calling plays for Daniel Jones, offering a broad explanation of his role as head coach:

“I’m the head coach, so I’m responsible for everything, whether it’s the defense, the special teams, the offense. … Almost everybody in the league does it as an offensive head coach”, according to the New York Post.

The decision to take control of the offense isn’t surprising, considering Daboll’s background. He earned his head coaching position with the Giants after his success as the offensive play caller for the Buffalo Bills. Under his leadership, the Bills’ offense climbed from 30th in points scored to third, showcasing his ability to elevate a team’s offensive performance.

In addition to the coaching change, the Giants have made several personnel adjustments. Star running back Saquon Barkley departed in free agency, signing with the Philadelphia Eagles. The Giants used the fifth overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft to select LSU wide receiver Malik Nabers, who is expected to be a key contributor. The offensive line has also seen a reshuffle with the additions of Jermaine Eluemunor at right tackle, Greg Van Roten at right guard, and Jon Runyan at left guard.

As the Giants prepare for the 2024 season, all eyes will be on Daboll and his ability to revitalize an offense that struggled last year.
