San Francisco 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey has been sidelined once again after suffering a posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) injury during the team’s 35-10 loss to the Buffalo Bills on Sunday, according to ESPN. Head coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed on Monday that McCaffrey would be placed on injured reserve, with a recovery timeline of six weeks, putting the remainder of his season in jeopardy.

McCaffrey’s injury came during the second quarter of Sunday’s game when he pulled up abruptly on a run. The injury appeared to be non-contact, and McCaffrey was quickly escorted to the blue medical tent before walking back to the locker room on his own. Initially, the 49ers labeled McCaffrey as questionable to return, but he was ultimately ruled out for the rest of the game by the start of the second half. Shanahan later stated that McCaffrey’s injury is “potentially” season-ending but did not provide further details.

In addition to McCaffrey’s injury, the 49ers also lost backup running back Jordan Mason, who was forced to leave the game with a high ankle sprain. Mason, who took over as the primary back when McCaffrey went out, will also be placed on injured reserve.

With both McCaffrey and Mason unavailable, rookie Isaac Guerendo is expected to step in as the starting running back for the 49ers.

McCaffrey had only recently returned to the field in early November after missing the first eight games of the season due to Achilles tendinitis and calf tightness. He had been a key player in the team’s offense upon his return, recording 50 carries for 202 yards and 15 receptions for 146 yards in the four games since rejoining the team. However, McCaffrey’s latest injury is another setback for the 49ers.

The loss of McCaffrey, along with Mason’s injury, leaves the 49ers in a difficult position as they struggle with a 5-7 record and sit at the bottom of the NFC West. While McCaffrey’s return had been a boost to the team, the 49ers continue to grapple with a series of other issues, including injuries to key players such as wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk, which have hampered their performance throughout the season.
