Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts shared an optimistic update regarding Shohei Ohtani’s status on Sunday. Ohtani, who suffered a shoulder injury during the team’s Game 2 victory over the New York Yankees, is “in a great spot” and is expected to be available for Game 3 on Monday at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx.

Roberts, addressing reporters, admitted he did not have the specific test results at hand. Instead, he relied on information from his medical team and Ohtani’s own assessment, saying, “He’s feeling good” as of Sunday morning.

“I think that he’s obviously very well aware of himself and his body, so if he feels good enough to go, I see no reason why he wouldn’t be in there,” Roberts commented, told the Washington Post. He emphasized, “If he feels good enough to go, I see no reason why he wouldn’t be in [the lineup].”

The final decision regarding Ohtani’s participation will be confirmed on Monday, but the initial outlook appears positive.

The incident occurred during Game 2 of the World Series on Saturday when Ohtani, attempting to steal second base in the seventh inning, suffered an injury to his left shoulder. The once-lively atmosphere at Dodger Stadium quickly turned to concern as Ohtani lay on the ground, clutching his left arm. The injury was later reported by Fox Sports’ Ken Rosenthal as a shoulder issue.

Fox Sports cameras captured alternate angles of Ohtani’s slide, showing the impact on his left shoulder as he made contact with the base. Audio from the field, translated by a Japanese-speaking account, revealed Ohtani telling a trainer that his shoulder “popped out of its socket.”

Despite the alarming moment, Roberts noted post-game that initial tests suggested a minor injury, specifically describing it as a “little” subluxation. While he didn’t elaborate further, his tone was reassuring.

The Dodgers maintained their 4-1 lead after Ohtani’s departure, eventually securing a 4-2 win to take a 2-0 series lead. The good news on Ohtani’s status has provided a sense of relief for fans as the 2024 World Series continues. The matchup marks Ohtani’s debut on baseball’s grandest stage, and his presence has significantly boosted ratings.

Ohtani’s baserunning has been a highlight of his first season with the Dodgers. Achieving an MLB milestone with a 50-50 season—59 steals in 63 attempts—he’s transformed from a fast, yet inconsistent, baserunner into one of the most efficient in the league. However, his postseason stealing attempts have posed more challenges, as seen in Saturday’s game. The Dodgers and fans alike will be hoping for a quick recovery as Game 3 approaches.
