Former Speaker Kevin McCarthy expressed confusion over former President Donald Trump’s false claim that Vice President Kamala Harris only recently “became Black.” Trump’s controversial remarks came during an appearance at the National Association of Black Journalists on Wednesday, where he stated, “I didn’t know she was Black until a number of years ago when she happened to turn Black”, told CNN.

Even some conservatives criticized Trump’s performance, with one remarking that “he did crap the bed” at the event.

On Thursday’s episode of Jesse Watters Primetime on Fox News, McCarthy was asked to comment on Trump’s statements. Watters inquired, “When you saw that at yesterday’s Black journalist convention, did you think he’s gonna lose votes because of that? Or do you think [it’s] one of these things that’s gonna blow over in a few days and it’s back to the races?”

McCarthy responded, “Well, at first I go, ‘Oh no, where are you going?’” He then praised Trump for attending the event, adding, “But when you say to look at it, Kamala was invited and she didn’t show. He will go anywhere. And the great thing about President Trump is he’s the same person in the front than he is behind. And he’ll tell it exactly how he sees it.”

Following the backlash, Trump doubled down on his remarks by sharing a post from right-wing conspiracy theorist Laura Loomer, who claimed that Harris cannot be Black because “Black” does not appear on her birth certificate.

Trump’s comments have sparked widespread criticism and raised questions about his understanding of race and identity. Vice President Harris, who is of Jamaican and Indian descent, has consistently identified as Black and has been a prominent advocate for racial equality and justice throughout her career.

The incident has underscored ongoing tensions and debates within the political sphere regarding race, identity, and representation. As the 2024 election season intensifies, these issues are likely to remain focal points in political discourse.

The reactions from both sides of the political spectrum highlight the divisive nature of Trump’s rhetoric and its potential impact on voter perceptions. While some may dismiss his comments as inconsequential, others see them as indicative of deeper issues within the political landscape.

As the conversation continues, it remains to be seen how such remarks will influence the broader political narrative and voter sentiment in the lead-up to the 2024 election.
