The New York Yankees announced the postponement of their three-game series opener against the Los Angeles Angels due to rain, told AP News. Originally scheduled for Tuesday night, the game will now be part of a traditional doubleheader on Wednesday, with the first game starting at 4:05 p.m. The second game will begin approximately 30 minutes after the conclusion of the first game.

Following the postponement, Yankees manager Aaron Boone shared the updated pitching plans. Right-handed pitcher Luis Gil, who holds an 11-5 record with a 3.20 ERA, will start Game 1 of the doubleheader. Right-hander Will Warren, making his second major league appearance, will take the mound for Game 2. Warren is currently 0-0 with a 6.75 ERA.

Warren debuted in MLB on July 30 against the Philadelphia Phillies, pitching 5.1 innings. He allowed four earned runs on four hits, walked two, and struck out six in a game the Yankees ultimately won 7-6 in extra innings.

Reflecting on Warren’s debut, Boone said, “Presence, confidence, probably was a little wound up early, but pitching against that lineup in Philly it felt like a big game and he walks in with a lot of confidence. Stuff to back it up. After getting punched in the mouth, he clamped down and got even better. Finished the night really strong and set us up for a win. He’s been throwing the ball well now for a month or two.”

Warren, 25, has made 20 starts for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre this season, posting a 5-5 record with a 6.11 ERA and a 1.40 WHIP. Despite these numbers, he has amassed an impressive 115 strikeouts over 95.2 innings, showcasing his potential.

The Yankees’ social media accounts indicated that additional details regarding the doubleheader would be posted shortly. Traditionally, Game 2 of a doubleheader starts about 30 minutes after the first game concludes.

The rescheduling of the game as part of a doubleheader comes at a critical time for the Yankees, who are looking to strengthen their position in the standings. The series against the Angels represents an important opportunity to gain momentum.

The Yankees’ decision to start Warren in the second game of the doubleheader indicates their confidence in the young pitcher. His performance against the Phillies demonstrated his resilience and ability to adjust under pressure, qualities that Boone highlighted as crucial.

As the Yankees prepare for the doubleheader, fans will be watching closely to see how Warren handles his second major league outing and whether Gil can continue his strong season. The outcomes of these games could have significant implications for the Yankees as they continue their push towards the playoffs.
